List of Utomik game improvements

Utomik provides some nice features by default (the whole data streaming thing, cloud storage on every game, installs all required dependencies, some games like the Neptunia series come with all DLC), but as we care about quality sometimes we like going a bit further, fixing game issues (because what's the point of having games if they don't work properly?) or sometimes even doing crazy stuff to improve the games further (for example, Sonic CD's remappable keybindings feature was added by us).

As we've never really communicated these improvements properly, I've decided to compile a list of game improvements so you can see what's changed on Utomik. If you've been unable to run a game due to bugs outside of Utomik, this list may just contain a fix allowing you to play it on Utomik! (If you're unable to play due to bugs even in Utomik and your system meets the specs, do report it - although we're not able to fix every bug, we may be able to fix your issue but we need to know of it first.) Default config changes (like disabling Soft Shadows and Frame Buffer Effects to prevent crashes in KOTOR), very minor fixes or improvements (like non-working buttons being disabled or removed, or no longer having to enter CD keys) and technical stuff that's not interesting to most players (like how we ported Sonic 4's launcher from Java to .NET) are not listed here. The list is in alphabetical order, using the full names as used on Utomik (e.g. 'Neptunia 3' is listed as 'Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3 V Generation' and KOTOR is listed as 'STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™').

(Disclaimer: While we tend to go unusually far in investigating and fixing game issues, I must note that as we formally only distribute the games, the responsibility of fixing bugs lies with the original developers of the game so we cannot guarantee anything when it comes to game fixing. In fact, we don't even have any of the developer-exclusive tools or data generally required to fix these issues, but we use our technical wizardry to do these things with no more data or tools provided to us than is provided to anyone who buys the games. There's a reason most other platforms don't bother even trying to do this ;) )

Some of the entries mention dgVoodoo, which is something like a graphics rendering compatibility layer for older games made by an awesome guy named Dege who gave us permission to use his work. Each game using dgVoodoo on Utomik comes with the config tool which, if you're a tinkerer, you can use to do crazy stuff like improve the game's resolution or enable windowed mode in a fullscreen-only game. If you break your game this way, just delete 'dgVoodoo.conf' and Utomik will re-download the original config the next time you start the game.

Without further ado, the list:

ArcaniA: Gothic 4
* Added a check on startup for incompatible audio settings which would cause the game not to run; it now gives instructions on how to change settings to make the game run properly.

Back to the Future (episodes 1-5)
* Fixed issue where the game or its save data would not work if your Windows username contains special characters.

Caribbean Sea Fishes
* Added dgVoodoo to fix an issue with mouse movement in fullscreen on Windows 10 (possibly Windows 8 as well?).

Debugger 3.16 Hack'n'Run
* Fixed a crashing issue.

Delicious - Emily's Tea Garden
* Fixed a crash on startup on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Dream Pinball 3D
* Removed the much-disliked registration requirement and activation system. (Obviously, it does still have our non-intrusive Utomik DRM :) )

Fall of the New Age
* Fixed a bug which would cause the game console to suddenly pop up (leaving you unable to play unless you figure out how to close it).

Finding Teddy
* Fixed a bug where under certain circumstances the game would consistently crash when entering the spider door.

Gold Rush
* Fixed a crash on startup on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Gothic 3
* Shader cache generation is now optional and asked on start if not present (so you can start immediately, though the game runs better if you do choose to wait several minutes to have it generate the shader cache).
* This also removed the need for the 'now generating shader cache' message, which had a bug on some systems where it popped up BEHIND the game screen, leading to a black screen that wouldn't go away no matter how long you waited (as it's waiting for you to press 'Ok' on the invisible message box first). This message has been removed, solving this problem.

Gothic II: Gold Edition
* Added dgVoodoo to fix issues with camera controls and missing interface elements on Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Heart's Medicine - Season One
* Fixed a bug which made it impossible to click on a special patient in level 4-5, making it impossible to meet the special objective.

Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart
* On Windows 'N' versions without Media Feature Pack, the game now displays a message explaining why the game can't run and how to install MFP to fix this. (Behavior on other platforms is that it just won't start in this situation with either a confusing error message or no feedback at all.)
* Fixed certain crashes.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1
* On Windows 'N' versions without Media Feature Pack, the game now displays a message explaining why the game can't run and how to install MFP to fix this. Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation
* On Windows 'N' versions without Media Feature Pack, the game now displays a message explaining why the game can't run and how to install MFP to fix this. (Behavior on other platforms is that it just won't start in this situation with either a confusing error message or no feedback at all.) (Now also fixed in the Steam version.)

LEGO® Batman™: The Videogame
* Fixed a crashing bug.

LEGO® Harry Potter: Years 1-4
* Fixed an issue where the game would crash on startup if your Windows default sound format was set to certain settings.

Mary le Chef – Cooking Passion Platinum Edition
* Fixed a performance issue that would lead to stuttering during gameplay.

Megadimension Neptunia VII
* On Windows 'N' versions without Media Feature Pack, the game now displays a message explaining why the game can't run and how to install MFP to fix this. (Behavior on other platforms is that it just won't start in this situation with either a confusing error message or no feedback at all.)

Men of Valor

* Fixed bug where the game would always crash in fullscreen if the display setup supports too many different resolutions.

STAR WARS™ Battlefront™ II
* Fixed a bug where the game could crash when attacking a planet.

STAR WARS™ Empire at War: Forces of Corruption

(Unfortunately, we are unable to fix the 'black screen on start' bug. Try alt-tabbing in and out to see if you get your screen back, and if you have a non-Intel graphics card make sure it's set as the default graphics device.)

STAR WARS™ Rebellion
* Fixed a bug where the game would refuse to run if installed on anything but a HDD or SSD (USB stick, SD card, virtual drive, network location, etc).

Should you encounter any serious unfixed bugs in games, please let us know. The error reporter that pops up after a crash will provide us valuable info if you submit the report (even if you don't enter any description, though descriptions are always helpful), while the 'Report Issue' button directly brings issues to our attention (it submits a ticket to our support system which we must look at and respond to). We generally don't/can't fix minor issues ("if you do this and this, you can glitch through a wall", graphical issues unless they make the game unplayable) or design issues ("this ui is counterintuitive", "this enemy/mission/element is flawed/unbalanced") but for consistent crashes or situations where games just refuse to run (unless caused by your PC not meeting the specs) we will do our best to investigate and hopefully fix the issue.
